This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Lucius Sulla and Lucius Manlius Torquatius in 82 BC. It was a special issue, struck by Sulla as Imperator and Manlius as Proquaestor (financial official). This picture shows the reverse of the coin.

The reverse depicts a Triumphator (a procession where a victorious general entered the city in a vehicle drawn by four horses), crowned by flying Victory. At the bottom is the legend 'L.SVLLA.IM' for 'Lucius Sulla, Imperator'.

Sulla returned from his campaigns in Asia in 83 BC, intent on seizing control. In the ensuing Civil War, both sides were minting coins, the designs of which generally refer to anticipated victory. This issue is that of Sulla and his Proquaestor.
