Add to albumThis is the obverse of a silver medal commemorating the 1715 Battle of Sheriffmuir, fought between government and Jacobite forces near Dunblane in Stirlingshire. The medal was made by John Croker in London.
The obverse has a bust of George I. The Latin inscription translates as 'George, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland. Defender of the Faith.'
The Battle of Sheriffmuir was indecisive, but the Hanoverian forces did prevent the Jacobites marching south to Edinburgh.
