SwordThis iron sword with a bronze guard was found at the site of the Roman fort at Fendoch in Perthshire. It was used by a member of the auxiliary infantry during the brief occupation of the fort between 83 and 87 AD. The sword is the long, slashing type favoured by auxiliary soldiers. It is missing its pommel. The fort at Fendoch is one of a series sometimes called the 'glen-blocking forts'. They were located at the mouths of the principal glens leading to the Highlands, probably to ensure supply routes for an intended push northwards by Agricola.
