This fragment of a sculptured stone was found at Lasswade in Midlothian. It was probably carved in the 10th or 11th century.

The sandstone fragment depicts the body of an animal with a long tail curled over its back. To the right is a diced border.

Elaborate Christian sculptures served several purposes. Some may have been memorials, while others made statements about political or ecclesiastical power. They could mark boundaries, define areas of sanctuary, or be a focus for religious practice.
