Netsuke, toggle of ivoryThis ivory netsuke is of a man planing wood inside the section of a barrel. A netsuke is used to fasten an inro, a small lacquered container, which hung from the sash of a man's kimono. They became miniature art forms in their own right. This netsuke of a man making a barrel is reminiscent of one of Hokusai's prints in which Mt Fuji is seen through the barrel. The man is planing the inside.
