Stone mould for casting bronze objects
Add to album

This stone mould was found at Trochrigg in Ayrshire. It has matrices on both sides. The mould was probably used to cast bronze objects, sometime between 200 BC and 1000 AD.

This side of the mould was used to cast a large oval object. The channel at the top for pouring in the molten metal is clearly visible.

Bronze could be cast into very intricate and ornate shapes using moulds. Even after iron was available, bronze was still widely used. Specialist metalworkers, working under the protection of powerful leaders, produced fine jewellery and other items.
