Add to album

This silver coin was minted for Sextus Pompeius by Quintus Nasidius in 44 or 43 BC. It is a type called a denarius, the most common Roman silver coin. It was struck somewhere during the campaigns of Sextus Pompey. This picture shows the obverse.

The obverse depicts Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great). In front is a trident, the symbol of the Neptune, god of the sea, who is identified by the legend 'NEPTVNI'. Sextus Pompey was known as the 'Son of Neptune'.

After the death of Pompey the Great in 48 BC, the struggle against Caesar passed to his sons Cnaeus Pompey and Sextus Pompey. In the confused years following Caesar's death, Sextus Pompey fought on different sides, sometimes as commander of the fleet.
