RecordTankard handle< 1 of 1 > Back From Newstead, Roxburghshire
Tankard handleThis bronze tankard handle comes from the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD and was used with a wooden tankard. Such tankards were a native style which the Romans adopted. The handle is of thin bronze which widens and becomes concave towards the middle. The ends are sharply splayed and bent, with rivet holes and cut sections for attaching the handle to the tankard. Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
