RecordMacehead< 1 of 1 > Back From Ardoch, Perthshire
MaceheadThis stone macehead was found at Ardoch in Perthshire. It was a high status object, used between 2900 and 2400 BC. The light brown macehead is of a 'cushion' type. It is sub-rectangular in plan, and has a round hole for a handle slightly towards one end. Stone maceheads were used as prestige items - symbols of power and, possibly, of rank - for several centuries. They were often made from attractive rocks, and rarely show signs of use.
