This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century fashion plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 25 March, 1836, it illustrates a bride's outfit.
By having the figures both standing and seated, the outfit can be appreciated from the front and back. The double triangular look, fashionable at the time, is created by having large puffed sleeves and full skirts joined in the middle by a tightly-laced waist.
It was only during the neoclassical period (around 1755-1805) that the colour white became customary for weddings. By the 1830s, it was essential and was a visual declaration of the bride's purity.
