Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver medal of Orange Lodge No 1657, presented to John Cranston in 1848 for admission into the Orange Order.

The obverse depicts a statute of William III on horseback, placed on top of a pedestal dated 1690. The inscription around the rim reads ' The Glorious Memory / No Surrender'.

An entrant into the Orange Order was required to swear support and defence of the monarchy and Protestantism. The first Orange Lodge in Scotland was formed by Irish weavers at Maybole in Ayrshire around 1800.
