Cannon, probably for use by Army of Solemn League and Covenant

This small brass cannon was made by James Monteith, an Edinburgh pewterer, in 1642. It was probably used by the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant.

The cannon is inscribed in relief 'JACOBUS MONTEITH ME FECIT EDINBURG ANNO DOM. 1642.'

The gun is similar in type to those used in the Swedish army of King Gustavus Adolphus. Gustavus was the first general to use light leather and brass guns that could be transported around the battlefield quickly. The manufacture of this gun was probably influenced by the experience of Scottish soldiers in the service of Sweden
