From Hillock Head, Towie, Aberdeenshire
This bronze rein guide from a yoke (also known as a terret) is one of two found at Hillockhead at Towie in Aberdeenshire, probably with other bronze objects (now lost). It was made sometime in the first three centuries AD.
The rein guide is of a type called a 'massive terret'. There are several breaks in the bronze. The terret shows considerable signs of wear.
Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. The rein guides range from plain to elaborate examples.
