Rein guide from yoke
Add to album

This bronze rein guide from a yoke, also known as a terret, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The rein guide is made of a rectangular-sectioned bar. It has two fat collars, and the ring was decorated with two, and probably three, plain oval studs. The object is broken and much decayed.

Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. The rein guides range from plain to elaborate examples, some like this one ornamented with enamel.
