Trade token (obverse), Penny, of R. Boog Junior, Kirkcaldy, Fife

This is the obverse of a copper penny trade token of R. Boog Junior, of Kirkcaldy in Fife. Dated 1797, this token may be regarded as a private token, struck for the designer, R. Boog Junior, to be used as gifts to friends or for exchange.

The obverse depicts a bust of Adam Smith with the text, 'ADAM SMITH/L.L.D: F.R.S./BORN AT KIRKALDY 1723', underneath.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
