Sporting gun, made in 1624
Add to album

This elaborately decorated sporting long gun was made by James Low of Dundee in 1624. It is made of brass. The only other all-brass long gun known is by the same maker.

The gun has a snaphance lock mechanism, which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. The butt, which is decorated with an open-work crown, extends to accommodate different users. The gun is signed 'IL' (for Iacob Low) and dated 1624.

James Low was a leading gun-maker, producing weapons of European standard. Most of his other works are in royal or princely collections in Europe.
