Add to album

This fragment of an iron knife with an openwork brass mount was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. This picture shows the back of the knife.

The knife has a straight edge on one side which tapers to a slight curve at the end. The sharp cutting edge is damaged.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland. Knives were essential items for soldiers, used for a variety of purposes.
