Axehead or adzehead

This bronze axe- or adzehead was found at Upper Barr, at Penninghame in Wigtownshire. It could have been used for a variety of woodworking tasks, from felling trees to trimming and shaping timbers. It could also have been used as a weapon.

The well-preserved axe- or adzehead has an expanded blade, prominent side flanges and a well-defined stop ridge which prevented the haft from slipping down the tool. It was made by casting in a two-piece mould.

If used as an axehead, the object would have had an L-shaped haft with a split end, with the flat side of the axehead facing the user. If used as an adzehead, the edge of the object would face the user.
