Nails

These iron nails were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They were used between 80 and 180 AD.

Both nails are square-sectioned. Both have been bent over, one ending in a curved loop, the other in a squared-off loop.

The Roman army needed blacksmiths to make iron tyres, fittings, and nails, as well as to repair weapons. A number of tools used in the smiddy have been found in the Roman forts, as well as a wide range of objects produced by the blacksmiths.
