This sprung-frame tricycle dates from around 1889. It was possibly made by The Howe Machine Company in Glasgow.

The direct front steering used on this machine became the standard pattern for all future tricycle designs.

The Howe Machine Company was founded by Elias Howe of Bridgeport Connecticut in the USA. A subsidiary factory was built at Bridgeton in Glasgow in 1872-73.
