Mantle for gas lamp
Add to album

A mantle is a dome-shaped mesh used to increase illumination in a gas or oil lamp. This mantle for a gas lamp (pictured here with its cardboard box) was made around 1920.

The mantle consists of a dome of cream gauze tied onto a fireclay mount in the form of a ring with three outward-turned lugs. On the front and back of the box is 'WIZARD/NO. 2 SIZE/INVERTED/GAS MANTLE/NO. 73898./BRITISH MANUFACTURE'.
