Saddle quern and rubbing stone from OrkneyA saddle quern was used for grinding grains and seeds. This saddle quern was found in Orkney. It could date any time between 4000 and 0 BC. The lower quernstone has been worn to a small hollow from the action of rubbing with a rubbing stone. The earliest type of quern, the saddle quern, was used from around 3800 BC. They were simple to use: the grains or seeds were placed on the lower stone, and a rubbing stone was pushed backwards and forwards over it.
