DishThis ceramic dish was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was imported from southwestern England between 140 and 180 AD. The dish is of a type known as black burnished ware 1 (BB1), a kitchen ware imported from southwestern England. It is cracked and missing a few sections. An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
