published in London
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century fashion plates. The plate may possibly be from The World of Fashion, a magazine published in London. The plates's title is, 'Newest Fashions for March 1831'.
The plate illustrates morning, evening and walking dresses, together with various hats and hairstyles. The walking dress on the right has the fashionable 'gigot' or 'leg-of-mutton' sleeves.
The World of Fashion (1824-91), published many inferior copies of French plates but, during its early years, it produced good quality plates engraved by William Wolfe Alais, en engraver who exhibited in Royal Academy in 1829 and 1833.
