TeapotThis silver gilt teapot was made by Edinburgh silversmith Robert Bowman, in 1782-3. The teapot body is decorated with garlands, bows and medallions. The spout and handle take the form of animal heads. During the 18th and 19th centuries, owning a silver teapot indicated status, wealth and taste. Tea was initially very expensive and in the 18th century teapots were small. In the 19th century tea became cheaper, more was drunk and teapots became larger.
