Trophy (detail), of Scottish Volunteer AmbulanceThis is a detail of a Scottish Volunteer Ambulance silver trophy. The trophy was awarded annually to the winners of the Scottish Volunteer Ambulance competition between 1904 and 1907. The main panel on the mount below shows medical treatment being given to a wounded soldier of the South African War. The inscription at the foot of the trophy reads 'SCOTTISH /VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE /TROPHY / INSTITUTED 1904'. Volunteer military ambulance units were formed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, recruited from medical students at the universities. Stretcher-bearer companies were also organised.
