Miniature portraits and photograph

These miniature portraits and the framed photograph date from between 1785 and 1860.

This tinted photograph shows a sergeant of the 71st (Highland) Light Infantry with his daughter. It dates from around 1860. This miniature portrait on the left is of Captain Henry Duncan of the Royal Navy. It dates from around 1800. The one in the centre is of Lieutenant Robert Nisbet of the 13th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons and dates from around 1815. The one on the right is of an unknown Royal Navy officer. It dates from 1795.

Service aboard ship, or in the garrisons of the British empire, often meant long periods of separation from home and family. Communication was difficult and the prospect of ever returning home was uncertain. Pictures such as these were kept as reminders of loved ones who might be parted for years at a time.
