Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is dated 1867 and illustrates three examples of 'Travestissements'- fancy dress costumes, two for women and one for a young girl. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The seated woman on the left is wearing an oriental outfit and carries a fan. The woman on the right has an ermine-trimmed historical outfit.

Adèle Anaïs Toudouze (1822-99), was one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Her work could also be seen in the top twenty fashion magazines including Le Follet and Le Magasin des Desmoiselles.
