Coin (obverse), half-unit or double crown, from reign of Charles I
Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold half-unit minted at Edinburgh between 1638 and 1642, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth £6 Scots or 10 shillings English.

The obverse bears a crowned portrait of the king. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'. There is a small sideways 'F' after the legend.

The 'F' on the coin is the initial of Sir John Falconer, Master of the Mint at this time.
