Rifle (detail), used in South African War

This Lee Enfield Magazine Rifle Mark I dates from 1900. It was carried in the South African War by Corporal A Chisholm of the Lovat Scouts.

The detail shows the battles in which the Lovat Scouts participated in the South African War engraved into the butt of the rifle.

The Lovat Scouts was formed in 1900 by Simon Fraser, 16th Lord Lovat. The unit recruited workers from the Lovat sporting estates whose stalking and shooting skills were felt to be ideally suited to the terrain and tactics of the war.
