From Strageath, Perthshire
This iron spearhead or javelin head was found at the site of the Roman outpost fort at Strageath in Perthshire. Part of the equipment of the auxiliary cavalry, it was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.
The spearhead or javelin head is corroded and broken off at the top.
Roman spears were either thrown or thrust at a target. The two functions led to differences in manufacture, with throwing spears (javelins) usually lighter. The auxiliary cavalry carried either throwing spears or the heavier thrusting lance.
