Add to albumThis set of five thistle-shaped pewter measures was probably made in Glasgow in the early 19th century. A complete set such as this is exceedingly rare.
The set is made of measures an Imperial pint and half-pint, and an Imperial gill, half-gill and quarter-gill. The measures have S-shaped handles and bear the Glasgow excise mark.
Measures of this type were made illegal because a portion of the contents could be held back in the bulb of the thistle unless the measure was tipped upright.
