RecordKnife (fragment)from Newstead, Roxburghshire
Knife (fragment)This fragment of an iron knife with an openwork brass mount was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The knife has a straight edge on one side which tapers to a slight curve at the end. The sharp cutting edge is damaged and the handle does not survive. A number of knives of various shapes and sizes were found at Newstead, presumably designed for a variety of purposes. Some, like this one, have decorative mounts.
