This iron candleholder is from Glenluce in Wigtownshire. It dates from the late 18th century.
The candleholder consists of a tall upright on a stand with four feet. In the middle of the upright is a small horizontal arm with a candle socket and drip pan at the end.
Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
