It was for military use and may date from the siege of 1455 when James II, using cannons brought from Linlithgow, forced the surrender of the castle. Bolt or arrowhead from Threave Castle, Kirkcudbrightshire Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century on a small island in the River Dee. It was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most powerful medieval families. In 1640, the castle was seized and largely destroyed by Covenanters.
