Pistol, made in 1701
Add to album

This pair of iron and silver pistols was made by John Stuart in 1701. The pistols belonged to Ludovic Grant, 8th Laird of Freuchie and 1st Laird of Grant.

Each pistol has a heart-shaped butt and a snaphance lock mechanism. This type of lock, which used a flint to spark the gunpowder, was favoured by Scottish gunsmiths. The pistols are inlaid with silver and engraved with flowers and foliage.
