This wooden model is of the armed merchant ship, the 'Yellow Carvel'. Built around 1475, the 'Yellow Carvel' is one of several ships mentioned in the Scottish records of that period. The model was built to a scale of 1:48 by Mr R Paterson of Lasswade in Midlothian.

No illustration of the 'Yellow Carvel' survives and this model represents a typical armed merchantman of the 15th century. It carries seven guns, crossbows and pikes. The mainmast has a fighting top. The coat of arms on the mainsail are those of Sir Andrew Wood, a Leith merchant.

In 1489-90, the 'Yellow Carvel', under the command of Sir Andrew Wood, successfully repelled English marauders in the Firths of Forth and Tay. With the help of another ship, the 'Flower', five English ships were said to have been captured.
