Soldiers and their families, Edinburgh CastlePhotograph of a group of 92nd Highlanders round a gun at Edinburgh Castle. To the right is a private soldier in full dress, while the others wear white jackets. A soldier's wife stands by the gun and a child is seated on the top. D.O. Hill's pictures are among the earliest to be taken of Scots soldiers. The status of soldiers in Scotland at this time was high and they were deemed to be suitable subjects for early pioneer work in the field of photography. David Octavius Hill (1801-1870) started his career as a painter but became interested in photography whilst planning a painting of the signing of the Deed of Demission. In 1843 he met Robert Adamson and in under 5 years they produced some 1800 photographs. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
