Jade figure of a hound

This jade hound is based on the design of early pieces. But it is carved in a mannered and simplified way. The body does not have the naturalistic effect of early pieces which often show solidity and roundness of forms. This may be a later piece.

The dating of Chinese jade objects is difficult. Jade recumbent hounds were carved in the Tang and Song periods. But the subject was later revived and was carved in a simplified form.
