Sword and scabbard, presented to Sir David Baird for his leadership at storming of Seringapatam

This sword and scabbard was presented to Sir David Baird in 1799 by the field officers who served under him at Seringapatam. It was very rare indeed for a sword of this quality to be given to a commander by private individuals.

The sword has a gold and enamel hilt embellished with diamonds, while the scabbard is made of gold mounted leather. General Baird's Arms are depicted on the hilt. On the shell guard are enamelled paintings of the surrender of the two princes at the Palace gate and the storming of the city. The knuckle is mounted with an enamel cartouche and has 'Seringapatam' in diamonds.

The Glasgow Herald and Advertiser of 24 April 1803 recounted that 'On the capture of Seringaptam, the Field officers employed on the storm, from a high sense of General Baird's merits in the command and conduct of that glorious enterprise entreated his acceptance of a sword which was ordered to be made in England to the value of 200 guineas; it has lately arrived, and does great credit to the taste and execution of Messrs. JEFFERIES and JONES.'
