Medal (obverse), Of Royal Geographical SocietyThis is the obverse of a gold founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society. The medal was awarded in 1885 to Joseph Thomson. The obverse depicts the bare head of William IV. The son of a Dumfriesshire stonemason, Thomson became interested in geology and natural history, and made a number of expeditions to Africa under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society.
