This is the reverse of a large naval gold medal awarded to Admiral Sir William Carnegie, Earl of Northesk, in 1805 for his part in the Battle of Trafalgar.

The gold medal is inscribed on the reverse 'RIGHT HONBLE. WILLIAM EARL OF NORTHESK.REAR ADMIRAL AND THIRD IN COMMAND ON THE 21 OCTOBER MDCCCV THE COMBINED FLEET OF FRANCE AND SPAIN DEFEATED.' The medal is fitted with a sewn together length of silk ribbon.

This large naval gold medal was one of only 3 awarded for the Battle of Trafalgar. The other medals were awarded to Lord Nelson and his 2nd-in-command Lord Collingwood.
