Miniature portrait, of unknown Royal Navy officer

This miniature portrait of an unknown Royal Navy officer dates from 1795. Together with the miniature is a strand of hair and some seed pearls. The initials 'W.B.' are on the back of the gilt oval frame.

Watercolour on ivory within a glazed gilt frame, the miniature portrays a naval officer of relatively junior rank, probably a lieutenant. His black leather shoulder-belt, fastened by its brass oval plate, would carry his sword.
