Porcelain plate with the arms of Baron George ElphinstoneThis porcelain plate is decorated with the coat-of-arms, crest and motto of Baron George Elphinstone. It was made in China in the second half of the 18th century. The plate is decorated with a floral border in dark blue. The Latin motto below the coat-of-arms translates as: 'Needs Must'. Born in Stirling in 1746, George Elphinstone had a distinguished career in the navy. He was created a Baron in 1797 and an admiral in 1801.
