Seal impression (cast), of Bishop Jocelin

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of Jocelin, Bishop of Glasgow, dating from around 1174.

The seal depicts a bishop, holding a crozier in one hand and raising the other in a blessing. This design is common on bishops' seals. The inscription '+ SIGILLVM IOCELINI GLASGVENSIS EPISCOPI' translates as 'Seal of Jocelin, Bishop of Glasgow'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

Bishop Jocelin rebuilt or completed Glasgow Cathedral which was consecrated in 1197. Only fragments of this building remain. Jocelin also obtained burghal privileges from William the Lion, including the right to hold a fair.
