Pistol (detail)

This detail shows the butt and lock of a flintlock revolving holster pistol. The pistol is said to have been made in the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad (now Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic). It dates from between around 1730 and 1740.

The revolving mechanism of the pistol has three chambers. The mechanism is unlocked by applying pressure on the front of the independent trigger guard.

Karlsbad became famous in the eighteenth century for small souvenirs such as folding knives, forks and spoons. These souvenirs were decorated with gold and silver, in the same way as guns produced in the area at that time for the Western and Turkish markets.
