Rupee (reverse), issued by the Honourable East India Company

This is the reverse of an East India Company silver one rupee piece, dated 1788, from the Straits settlement, Pulu Penang.

Silver 1-rupee piece, British Colonial, Straits Settlements, Pulu Penang, East India Company, 1788

Service in India provided openings for many Scots, especially the sons of upper and middle class families. This success prompted Sir Walter Scott to describe India as 'the corn chest for Scotland'.
