This photograph shows one of the stages in making an arrow. Here a suitable hazel branch is chosen for the shaft.
Much depended on early people's hunting skills. Making good arrows was a skilled task, from the choosing of the shaft to the careful production of the stone arrowhead. With a good bow and arrows an expert could fire an arrow over 100 meters.
Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
