Add to albumThis dragon mask would have been worn by the foremost of a one or more dancers hidden under the body costume. The dance was particularly popular at new year processions. The mask was held by the front dancer who worked the movable jaw.
This mask of black laquered wood has traces of gilding with all interior parts in red lacquer. The movable lower jaw is opened to reveal a red pointed tongue by a hinged handle underneath. The mask would snap at people in the crowd, particularly children.
