Add to albumThis is the obverse of a 1797 silver proof shilling trade token of J. Wright Junior of Dundee in Angus. Only a few proofs of this token were struck.
The obverse depicts Broughty Castle, a roofless ruin at that time, surrounded by the text, 'DUNDEE SHILLING PAYLE BY J. WRIGHT. JUNR'.
Broughty Castle was built not long after 1490. Bought as a ruin by the Government in 1855, it was redesigned as a coastal defence battery. At present the castle is a museum of local history and of the Dundee whaling industry.
